What sort of hair styles could you have if you had thick hair??

i have thick hair and whenver i get layers i get long layers and within 4 weeks my hair is all crap again

if i was to get short layers would it look stupid and stick out because ive got thick hair?

im going to a wedding in a months time and i want to wear my hair down. as i always wear my hair in a ponytail becuase it annoys me when its down.
