He's only 6, and has short hair that grows REALLY slow. How should I help him? (my mom doesn't know much about hair products and trends)

If he really wants "spiky hair" for a long time, go to your nearest beauty store and pick up some beeswax hair gel. I can't remember the name of it, but it is in a small round tin and it is orange. Be careful to make sure it is safe to use on children first, if so, just slap a little in there and go to work. lol. Seriously though, I would only suggest this if he wants some serious spikes, because i used it in my cousin's hair once, and it took like 4 washes to get it all out. If you don't want to resort to something this drastic, I would go for something a little less extreme, such as a extra hold styling gel or a mousse (preferrably the gel) and dab a little on, style as desired, and it should dry exactly that way!!! Good luck!!!

Well being a cosmetologist, I would offer this advice, when cutting the top, texturize the hair strands also, by using a thinning shears, careful not to cut too much (they cut off various pieces of hair closer to the scalp, thereby lifting and supporting the other pieces that you will have stand up, then use hair gel and a hair spray such as Paul Mitchells Freeze and shine, or something equivalent that dries quickly and firmly.
